Celebrating a HIP milestone
$100 million!
Celebrating $100 million in HIP incentives
You've heard us talk a lot about the state's Healthy Incentives Program, which provides 100% reimbursement to SNAP-eligible recipients for purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables. (If you haven't heard us talk about it yet, you can learn more and apply online if you're eligible.)
Quabbin Harvest has been a HIP vendor ever since the program started in 2017. In fact, we were the top enroller in the state in that first year.
Since then, we're proud to have distributed about 19,000 HIP fruit and vegetable shares through our unique biweekly distribution format. The food is sourced as locally as possible and packed by our dedicated cadre of volunteers. The photo above shows a typical veggie share from a recent week.
It's a LOT of good food! But it's also just one drop in a really amazing bucket, because the program just celebrated $100 million in incentives earned statewide over the past nine years.
That's $100 million going back into the local food economy via local farms (and a few other small food businesses like ours). This is truly a win-win-win program and we're grateful to all the legislators, advocates, and others who support it every time the state's budget season comes around.
As federal food assistance gets cut further and further and the need continues to grow, this is something we can all celebrate and be proud of.
