Quabbin Harvest is seeking a full-time Store Manager to take charge of our store operations. We are a grocery store with a mission: to provide healthy food at an affordable price, while building community, supporting local agriculture, and respecting the environment. As a co-operative with over 1000 members, we are democratically governed by our members via an elected Board of Directors, following the seven Co-operative Principles: voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; member economic participation; autonomy and independence; education, training, and information; co-operation among co-operatives; concern for community. We work closely with our not-for-profit partners, Quabbin Food Connector (funding some of our programs for low-income eaters) and Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust (preserving farmland in our region and acting as our landlord). We are located at 12 North Main Street in Orange, MA.

The Store Manager provides day-to-day supervision of store operations including:

  • inventory selection, ordering and management
  • staff hiring, training, scheduling, payroll, supervision, and review
  • vendor relations
  • working collaboratively with the Kitchen Manager on ordering, food safety, regulatory compliance, and catering arrangements
  • marketing and merchandising
  • oversight of technological and facilities systems
  • supervision of in-store volunteers

The Manager is actively involved in Board and Committee meetings

  • Attends monthly Board and Committee meetings (Outreach, Finance, Development, and Personnel)
  • Attends weekly Operations Team meetings
  • Coordinates and leads quarterly Staff meetings
  • Attends other meetings as needed

The Manager participates in administrative activities

  • Actively tracks departmental margins to identify trends and to meet budgetary goals
  • Works collaboratively with the bookkeeper to complete month-end bookkeeping duties, ensure timely invoicing; manage cash flow and bill payment
  • Tracks and responds to sales trends
  • Works as a member of the Operations Team to track weekly sales, manage A/P, identify and respond to emerging needs
  • Maintains appropriate Town licensure including Business License, Board of Health permits and other legally required documentation.

The Manager works to develop and implement the various components of the Community Shares Program, which provides no-cost distributions of food to low-wealth households through a variety of partnerships and grants.

  • Works closely with the Community Shares Coordinator
  • Works with community partners to identify opportunities
  • Works independently to create budget and all aspects of programming; including ordering from varied sources, designing appropriate marketing materials, and identifying an appropriate audience
  • Works with staff to ensure the successful completion of the programming

Other responsibilities

  • Works to align all store operations and programs with the co-op’s mission
  • Represents the co-op in public and partnership situations
  • Is available for occasional after hours contact with vendors and staff to respond to emerging needs
  • Maintains ServSafe and Allergen Awareness Certifications

The Store Manager is a salaried 40-hour per week exempt position.

Qualifications

  • Retail grocery experience - at least at the level of department manager
  • Financial management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience using various forms of social media, Canva, and Mailchimp
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Docs and QuickBooks
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects
  • Aptitude for creative problem solving and analytical troubleshooting and creative problem solving
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a dynamic team
  • Responsiveness and openness to change
  • Initiative, flexibility, and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to exercise responsible judgement while keeping with the goals and mission of Quabbin Harvest
  • Ability to maintains a positive and encouraging attitude
  • Ability to promote a positive in-store environment for customers, staff, and volunteers
